About the Team

Our Data Science team supports strategic decision-making across the company by providing insight into complex business problems, building data products and tools to scale the impact of data at OpenAI, and ensuring a robust and trustworthy data foundation.

About the Role

As a Data Scientist on the Strategic Intelligence & Risk team, you will embed with teams working on cutting-edge research and product development, helping to manage risks across the business and drive forward key strategic initiatives. Your work will involve analyzing a wide range of data to understand the impacts of our models, identify potential risks, and inform strategies to mitigate them. You will partner with researchers, engineers, and product managers to develop data-driven insights and solutions that are critical to our mission of safe and beneficial AGI.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with research and product teams to define key questions and analytical approaches related to strategic intelligence and risk.
  • Conduct deep-dive analyses on complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies relevant to model safety, societal impact, and business risks.
  • Design and implement metrics, dashboards, and reporting systems to monitor risk indicators and model behavior.
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines and tools to support data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly and effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Contribute to the overall data strategy and data best practices within OpenAI.

You Might Be a Good Fit If

  • You have a strong background in data analysis, statistical modeling, and experimental design.
  • You are proficient in SQL and Python (or R) for data manipulation and analysis.
  • You have experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker).
  • You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
  • You are passionate about the ethical development and deployment of AI and are motivated by the challenges of managing risk in advanced AI systems.
  • You have a proactive and independent work style, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
