About the Role
Xometry is seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer to join our Generative AI and Geometric Integration team. In this role, you will apply your foundational knowledge of mechanical design, manufacturing processes, and 3D CAD data to support high-stakes strategic initiatives—specifically DFM AI + IQE integration. Working closely with our Data Science and Product teams, you will act as a hands-on domain expert to translate physical manufacturing constraints, 2D technical drawings, and 3D geometry into structured inputs that train and improve Xometry’s proprietary AI engine. This position bridges the gap between traditional mechanical engineering and modern software automation, helping build a real-time digital thread directly inside our partner’s ecosystem (NX, Designcenter, and Teamcenter).
This role requires a hybrid schedule (3 days a week) at our Waltham, MA or North Bethesda, MD office location.
How You'll Contribute
1. Partnership Execution (DFM/IQE)
- Geometric Feature Analysis: Analyze native 3D CAD models to identify complex geometric topologies, specific features (such as deep pockets, complex threads, thin walls), and GD&T annotations to verify that Xometry's automated engine is reading them accurately.
- Integration Support: Assist in testing and validating the real-time manufacturability (DFM) and pricing feedback loops embedded directly within Siemens NX and Teamcenter workflows.
2. Hands-on AI Collaboration & Data Labeling
- Engineering Ground-Truth: Partner daily with Data Scientists and Machine Learning engineers to provide the "ground-truth" engineering logic required to train Generative AI models.
- Multimodal Data Processing: Assist in creating, reviewing, and structured-labeling datasets from 2D technical drawings, PDFs, and purchase orders so the AI can learn to extract engineering data flawlessly.
3. DFM Rule Mapping & Testing
- Manufacturing Logic Mapping: Help document and map standardized manufacturing constraints across various processes (CNC machining, sheet metal, 3D printing) into discrete rules for software consumption.
- Continuous Testing: Conduct regression testing on software outputs, comparing AI-generated pricing and lead times against real-world manufacturing metrics to spot errors and improve performance.
4. Cross-Functional Coordination
- Day-to-Day Alignment: Work as a reliable technical point of contact across internal engineering, operations, and external partner development tracks to keep the integration milestones on schedule.
What You'll Bring to Xometry
Experience & Education
- Experience: 2-5+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical design, manufacturing engineering, or a closely related industrial environment.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required.
Technical Skills
- CAD Proficiency: Solid working knowledge of enterprise CAD/PLM systems. Direct experience using Siemens NX and Teamcenter is a major plus.
- Manufacturing & GD&T Basics: Strong foundational understanding of standard manufacturing methods (particularly multi-axis CNC milling/turning and sheet metal fabrication) and a clear ability to interpret ASME Y14.5 GD&T prints.
- Software/Scripting Familiarity: Comfortable working in a tech-forward software environment. Basic proficiency in Python or a strong willingness to learn it for automated data analysis and geometric manipulation is highly desired.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
- Collaboration: Strong capability to communicate technical engineering concepts clearly to non-mechanical peers, such as software developers and data scientists.
- Problem-Solving: High attention to detail, strong spatial reasoning, and an agile mindset comfortable with rapid experimentation and iterating.
