The big picture: The Data Visualizations & Automation Producer will sit at the center of our expanding data pipeline, owning visualization integrity across Axios Local. This editor will build a system for automated visuals at scale, ensuring charts, maps and outputs meet Axios’ editorial standards.

  • Chart quality
  • Template standardization
  • Automation guardrails
  • Visualization best practices
  • Protecting trust while enabling scale

Go deeper:

  • Create automated visualization workflows in partnership with product/engineering, and help train AI systems and templates on visualization best practices.Set and enforce style and standards for charts, maps and graphics across all markets.
  • Audit datasets feeding visualization pipelines, including validating data sources, transformations and overall integrity and newsworthiness.
  • Identify and correct misleading, inconsistent or unclear visual framing, and build guardrails to reduce error rates in automated chart generation.
  • Design reusable, scalable chart templates for common story types.
  • Produce centralized, data-driven stories for distribution across markets.
  • Support complex local investigations requiring advanced visualization.
  • Prototype new visual storytelling formats.
  • Train reporters on querying datasets and using visualization tools, and provide feedback on local data stories and graphics.
  • Identify and source new data sets from available marketplace.

Worthy of your time:

  • Experience creating editorial charts and illustrations.
  • Strong journalism background with demonstrated data reporting experience.
  • Ability to work with automated pipelines and reporter-generated queries, so they need to be comfortable validating data at the source (SQL).
  • Deep understanding of visualization principles and common pitfalls.
  • Obsessed with understanding AI and how it can be utilized to automate workflows.
  • Experience building templates or repeatable workflows.
  • Comfort working alongside product and engineering teams.
  • Ability to spot anomalies and think systematically.
  • Clear communicator who can translate complex methodology simply.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $87,000 - $110,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country.
