About the Role
Everlaw is seeking a Staff/Principal AI Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the company's technical strategy for applying AI within its product. This position is central to Everlaw's vision of becoming the AI leader in legal discovery and litigation technology, where AI is deeply integrated rather than an afterthought. The role involves tackling complex litigation reasoning tasks at a massive scale, processing millions to hundreds of millions of documents and multimodal inputs.
You will lead a core squad of AI engineers, providing technical guidance to foster AI expertise across the broader engineering organization. You'll collaborate with and learn from a community of staff and principal engineers specialized in areas like databases, storage, search, cloud infrastructure, full-stack SaaS design, data science, and performance. This role offers regular interaction and visibility with the Chief Technology Officer and other senior company leaders.

This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position requiring 3 days/week in the Oakland, California office.

In Your Role, You'll...
- Lead AI Technical Strategy: Design and implement Everlaw's AI technical strategy, staying at the forefront of frontier models. This includes participating in early access programs with major AI labs (Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) to provide direct feedback on unreleased models and API design, and staying informed about open-source advancements. You will devise the overall approach to using AI at a trillion-token scale.
- Guide Engineers in AI: Lead by example in staying updated with industry developments and sharing knowledge through structured feedback on design documents/code reviews, tech talks, or AI research paper study groups.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with other software engineers, security engineers, data scientists, product leads, designers, and other teams to achieve the goal of being an AI leader in litigation.
- Identify New AI Opportunities: Spot instances where ML/AI technological advancements in industry or research can be translated into Legal Tech, influencing engineering and product direction to bring the best ideas to market.
About You
- Experience: At least 6 years in ML/AI and 10+ years overall in software engineering.
- Project Leadership: Led significant AI projects, including the applied use of LLMs in production and experience with NLP/text analysis.
- Programming Skills: Proficiency in at least one scripting language, such as Python.
- Continuous Learner: Stays abreast of the latest AI developments and their practical applications.
- Collaborative: Effectively collaborates with diverse teams, capable of deep technical discussions with AI experts and simplifying complex concepts for non-specialists, and willing to share knowledge.
Pluses
- Experience with Retrieval-based LMs or hybrid approaches like RAG for large custom data sets.
- Designed approaches for knowledge storage and representation, familiar with vector and graph databases.
- Explored multimodal approaches, including image, audio, or video processing.
- Built agents to accomplish tasks, including approaches for supervision, backtracking, exception handling, tool use, MCP, etc.
- Previous experience with SaaS and distributed systems.
