About the Role
This role will lead software engineering for developing industry-leading AI software using cutting-edge research breakthroughs. As our VP of Engineering, you will be tasked with providing leadership to a group of SW and ML engineers in an innovative and fast-paced environment, with a combination of horizontal (platform) and vertical (project, product development) responsibilities.
You will own and drive complex technical projects from the concept/planning stage through execution and release, in close collaboration with various other functions including Product Management and Technical Program Management. You will have the technical chops to roll up your sleeves, provide technical leadership to major projects, and manage a large team of engineers. You will own your project goals, contribute to product strategy, and develop your team. Job Responsibilities
Technical abilities
- Design, implement, test, debug, deploy, and maintain full-stack features
- Set team vision, technical direction, architectural approach, and execution, and be accountable for the success of complex projects.
- Drive the technical roadmap and execution to scale, and launch new LLMs
- Scope problems and recommend technical solutions that consider both short and long-term needs, and implement solutions or delegate the implementation to reports (i.e. go beyond simply implementing others’ ideas)
- Demonstrated ability to learn complex new application domains and ecosystems
Organizational Leadership and Team Management
- Build a strong engineering team and lead them to realize their potential and effectively deliver impact while fostering a team culture that focuses on Eng/Product/Ops excellence
- Collaborate with PM, UX, and other functional leads to establish a shared technology, product vision, and roadmap for the team
- Collaborate with product and research teams to define the feature set, API interfaces, and technical requirements for launching new models and features.
- Drive communicating the larger vision of the org and connecting the dots between the business and technical priorities to leadership, peers, and teams
Strategy & Execution
- Collaborate with senior developers and the larger team to gather requirements, define high-level architecture, and review detailed designs.
- Participate in the full life cycle of new modules/features: shape product strategy, understand product requirements, contribute to system design, coach SWEs to implement and land these features
- Execute the strategies and roadmap and deliver high-impact solutions
- Own and drive outcomes for large, complex initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Masters or Ph.D. degree in a relevant engineering discipline or computer science is preferred
- 7+ years of professional ML software engineering experience
- Ability to go deep into technical problems and work closely with engineers and technical leads, coupled with the ability to see the big picture of technical tradeoffs and direction
- Experience with AI applications, solutions, and technology
- Demonstrated ability to successfully lead software engineering teams building and delivering complex, customer-facing systems at a global scale
- Outstanding cross-functional record of collaborating closely with and influencing non-technical and technical stakeholders
Preferred Experience
- Deep ML/AI engineering expertise, ideally with experience in large language models and finetuning techniques
- Experience with technical innovation at an early stage and in fast-paced environments
- Ability to recruit and develop technical talent and inspire and motivate an engineering team to work together as a cohesive and highly productive unit
- Building and operating SaaS or PaaS offerings on public cloud infrastructure
- Developing pricing models, SLAs, and operating agreements for AI/ML products
- Cultivate ideas across organizational boundaries that create strategic opportunities.
- Proven track record of ideation and innovating exceptional technology at scale, while motivating others to act by creating a shared sense of vision and purpose
